5th place for Malta in the Mediterranean Cup

5th Place for Malta in the Mediterranean Weightlifting Championships.

A selected team from the Malta Weightlifting Association has just participated in the 10th Edition of the Mediterranean Weightlifting Championships held in La Coruna, Spain. During this competition the Maltese athletes competed against teams from Bosnia Herzegovina, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Italy, Israel, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey. This year’s edition was won by Turkey, followed by Spain and France with Malta clinching the 5th place.

First to lift for the Maltese was the youngster Andy Grech who managed to conclude his first international competition in amazing form by recording a personal best total of 185kg and scoring 235 points.

Next in action in the women’s section were the newcomers Elisia Scicluna and Kristen Borg. Despite being their first international event both athletes performed well and completed the competition with great success scoring 157 and 156 points respectively

In the final competition, Malta was represented by Matthew Camilleri and Rodmar Pulis. In spite of the limping start, Camilleri still managed to deliver, scoring a total of 229kg, earning 275 points. Last on the platform for Malta was Pulis whose currently preparing for the Summer edition of the Olympic Games in Rio. Pulis managed to produce a stellar performance breaking a new national record in the Clean & Jerk and scoring an overall 309 points.

These results inaugurate well for the Maltese lifters’ possibilities of qualifying for next year’s Mediterranean Games held in Tarragon, Spain.

The Maltese contingent was led by the Malta Weightlifting coach Jesmond Caruana. Malta’s  participation in this competition wouldn’t have been possible without the constant support of the Maltese Olympic Committee and Sport Malta.
