The Malta weightlifting Association organised successfully the first competition of the year, it was a very important one since it was the last chance for athletes to qualify for the next international competitions.
The first competition was for cadets, a nice number of youngsters participated with the best results coming from Rylee Borg with 125 points he also managed to set three national record in the 40kg category. Kyle Camilleri placed 2nd with 117 points, he also set a new national record in the 30kg category.
The second competition was for the athletes that are preparing for the European Union Championships. In the Under 15 the best results for boys came from Lionel Zerafa, lifting 61kg and Shelby Vassallo for girls lifting 56kg. In the under 17 boys, best result came from Kieran Mifsud lifting 215kg and Shazel Guzman for girls lifting 75kg. In the junior category men best result came from Andy Grech, lifting 175kg and Rebecca Fitz for women lifting 89kg and breaks 6 national records in the Clean & Jerk and Total.
The third competition of the day was for seniors women. The entire athletes did their best to secure their position in the national team. Placing first in this competition was Pamela Psaila lifting the total of 137kg and score 188points, she also set three new national records. The 2nd place went Yazmin Zammit Stevens lifting the total of 129kg and score 163points. The 3rd place went for Elisia Scicluna lifting the total of 135kg and score 154points, she was followed by Kristen Borg lifting the total of 98kg and score 151points.
The last competition of the day was for men seniors, this was dominated by Rodmar Pulis with the total of 244kg and scoring 302 points. Pulis was followed by Matthew Camilleri lifting the total of 226kg scoring 269 points and Anton Micallef lifting the total of 202kg scoring 237 points.
Rodmar Pulis, Kyle Micallef, Ryan Agius, Pamela Psaila and Yazmine Zammit Stevens, are the athletes that qualified as a team to represent Malta in the European small nations in Cyprus. Matthew Camilleri, Andy Grech, Elisia Scicluna and Kristen Borg, qualified to represent Malta in the Mediterranean cup in Spain. Both international competitions are going to be held next March.
