The Malta Weightlifting Association is beyond proud to announce that for the first time ever they will have multiple lifters representing Malta at the Commonwealth Games this year in Birmingham. After successfully participating at several previous editions of these Games with a single athlete, this year the MWA have 4 female athletes who will be lifting on the Commonwealth Games.
Yasmin Zammit Stevens and Tenishia Thornton managed to qualify in multiple weight categories for these games but were finally decided as Malta’s 64kg and 59kg female lifters respectfully. This will the first time Games appearance for Thornton at just 16 years old.
Roberta Tabone qualified in the 71kg category. This will be Roberta’s first ever Games appearance also.
The forth addition to the Maltese team is Elisa Scicluna, who will be competing in the 87kg+ category following qualification due to reallocation of places. While Scicluna has been in the sport for several years, this will also be a first time Games experience for her.
The MWA is overjoyed by the results of it’s hard work throughout the past years in not only increasing the amount of weightlifting athletes practicing the sport, but also increasing the level at which these athletes compete.
