Jesmond Caruana reelected as Vice-President

The Electoral Congress of the Mediterranean Weightlifting Confederation saw Jesmond Caruana, the President of Malta Weightlifting, reelected as Vice-President.

SLIEMA, MALTA – The Mediterranean Weightlifting Confederation (MWC) has entered a new era of leadership following its Electoral Congress held on October 7, 2023, in Sliema, Malta. The confederation has elected a new Executive Board, with the spotlight shining brightly on the renowned triple Olympic Champion, Pyrros Dimas of Greece, who now stands as the newly elected President.

The MWC’s leadership elections were characterized by unanimous acclamations, reflecting a united front and a shared vision for the future of weightlifting in the Mediterranean region. The elected leadership is as follows:

President: Pyrros Dimas (GRE)

General Secretary: Manareddin Eshelli (LBA)

Vice Presidents: Jesmond Caruana (MLT) and Ahmed Abdelmaksoud Muhamed (EGY)

The Executive Board has been strengthened with the inclusion of Bossian David (FRA) and Maurizio Lo Buono (ITA). Additionally, Nedim Masic (BIH), Boubaker Bechradui (TUN), and Kamel Saidi (ALG) have been appointed as members by the Executive Board.

In his inaugural address, President Pyrros Dimas articulated his vision, stating, “Our goal is to make weightlifting bigger, more beautiful, and to elevate it to the position it rightfully deserves.”

The Congress also featured a presentation on the upcoming 2026 Taranto (ITA) Mediterranean Games. The enthusiasm was palpable as participants unanimously expressed their eagerness for the 2025 Mediterranean Weightlifting Cup and training camp to be hosted in Taranto.

The event saw representation from major weightlifting bodies. The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) was represented by President Mohammed Jalood via Zoom and live by its General Secretary, Dr. Antonio Urso. The Weightlifting Federation of Africa marked its presence through President Khaled Mehalhel and General Secretary Manareddin Eshelli. The European Weightlifting Federation was represented by President Antonio Conflitti and General Secretary Milan Mihajlovic. The Congress was a blend of physical and virtual participation, with eleven countries attending in person and five joining online.

This pivotal Congress not only marks a new chapter for the MWC but also sets the stage for an exciting future for weightlifting in the Mediterranean region.

The European Weightlifting Federation (EWF) has awarded Certificates of Appreciation to the Mediterranean Weightlifting Confederation (MWC) and the Malta Federation in recognition of their efforts to develop weightlifting in the Mediterranean region.

The leadership of the European Weightlifting Federation (EWF) met with Charles Camenzuli, the esteemed President of AIPS Europe. During this meeting, the EWF provided insights into their recent activities and initiatives. Furthermore, both parties engaged in constructive discussions, exploring avenues for future cooperation and collaboration to further the cause of weightlifting on the European continent.
