At the end of the Qualification Period (31 October, 2017), it has been confirmed that two of our athletes, Yazmin Zammit Stevens and Kieran Mifsud, have qualified for the finals in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
Zammit Stevens has secured her place at the Games in the 63kg category together with Mifsud in the 105kg and +105kg. It now has to be decided which body weight category Mifsud will eventually lift in and give up his qualifying spot in the other category.
Two other Maltese athletes, Kyle Micallef and Jessica Edge, had also competed in these ranking competitions and finished in very respectful positions, with Micallef placing 17th in the 85kg category and Edge in 16th in the 53kg category.
The qualifications started on 25th October 2016 in Penang Malaysia during the Commonwealth Championships. Since then around 26 IWF approved competitions where organised. Maltese athletes had the opportunity to compete in in six different competitions including two commonwealth championships in Malaysia and Australia, Europeans Seniors in Croatia, European Juniors in Albania, Qatar Cup in Qatar and Universiade Games in Taipei.
