Malta National Championship 2011

On the 4th December the Malta Weightlifting Association organised the National Championships as its closing local Competition for this year. A good number of both male and female athletes took part in this event.

In the male Cadet section Rylee Borg won the 30kg category with 78 points. Kirsten Coleiro won the 40Kg Category with 115 points. Miguel Grixti won the 50Kg Category with 116 points followed by Isaac Fava with 75 points. In the Female Cadet Section we had Francesca Mercieca who won the 36 Kg Category with 68 points while the 48Kg Category was won by Beatrix Galea with 76 points.

In the youths section Thomas Farrugia won the 69 Kg Category with a total of 122Kg. Hayden Farrugia won the 77 Kg Category with a total of 113Kg. Joran Farrugia won the +94Kg. In the Female Youths Section Nicole Gatt won the 53Kg Category with a total of 79Kg, she also managed to break eight national records in the Youths and Juniors Classes. Destiny VellaBusutill won the 63Kg Category with a total of 94Kg, she also managed to break six national records.

In the Senior Category Ryan Agius won the 69Kg with a total of 155Kg. Clint Grech won the 77Kg Category with a total of 200Kg. The 85Kg Category was won by Jovan Relic with a total of 185Kg followed by James Formosa with a 150Kg total. The 94Kg Category was won by Noel Coleiro with a total of 221Kg. The +105Kg Category was won by Matthew Attard with a total of 190Kg followed by Simon Brincat with a total of 169Kg. The 58Kg Female Category was won by Marilyn Grech with a total of 81Kg.

In the General Classifications Clint Grech gained first place with 265 points followed by Noel Coleiro with 256 points and Matthew Muscat Inglott with 251 points.

The Competition was run by Jesmond Caruana, assisted by technical officers Ramona Borg, Gayle Caruana, Rodienne Balzan, Alfred Ellul Mercer, David Saliba and Kristian Mintoff. Also making this competition possible were various coaches and volunteers. The Association would also like to gratefully acknowledge the assistance of Paparukei Catering and the ‘Kunsill Malti Ghall-Isport’. During this competition a Collection was held in aid of ‘L-Istrina’.

Next week Noel Coleiro will be going to Tel Aviv Israel to represent Malta in the Mediterranean cup Competition he will be accompanied by Jesmond Caruana, Association President.

On the 21st of December the MWA will organise an Awards Night in Cottonera Sports Complex during which trophies will be presented to the winners of the National Championships and other trophies will be presented for honours of achieved by athletes during 2011.
