More National records in the Malta Open.

The Malta Weightlifting Association successfully organised the Malta Open
championship last Sunday at the Cottonera sport complex.

The first competition of the day was for the cadets. A good number of
youngsters; all under the age of 13 participated with the best results for
boys coming from Rylee Borg with 131 points followed by Kyle Camilleri 101
points and Jason Spiteri 70 points. The best result for girls U15 came from
Shelby Vassallo with 105 Points while the U17 came from Shazel Gusman with
123points, who also managed to set four new national records in the 69kg
youths division with a total of 97kg. Andy Grech was the winner of the
men’s U20 division with a total of 233 points.

Placing first in the senior womens’ competition was Yazmin Zammit Stevens
who lifted a total of 149 kg which gave her 196 points, whilst setting two
national in the process in the 69kg division. 2nd place went to Jessica
Borg Ghigo with a total of 180 points, followed by Kristen Borg with 157
points.

The final competition of the day was men seniors which involved a high
number of athletes and produced a great level of lifting. This was the most
challenged and hard fought division of the day. First place went for
Matthew Camilleri who accumulated 277 points, followed by Kyle Micallef on
255 points and Vlad Baldacchino with 251 points. Very positive results were
also produced from a number of new lifters. Yannik Pace gained a total of
233 points whilst brothers Owen and Kurt Camilleri were both just shy of
breaking the 200 point mark.
