Next week, the Malta Weightlifting Association will be organizing the third edition of the European Union Weightlifting Championships along with the first ever Malta International Weightlifting Open. These events will be held across the first week of May between the 6th and the 7th, at the Cottonera Sports Complex.
Unlike other continental championships, this tournament focuses mainly on youth development and hence the competitions are open only for junior athletes from three different age groups: Under 15, Under 17 and Under 20. This year’s event will feature some of the finest young talent from all over the continent as more than 100 athletes from 20 different countries will battle it out for the European Union title. Without any doubts, one of the athletes to look out for during this tournament will be the Latvian Rebeka Koha who has just won silver medal in this year’s European Senior Championships in Norway.
For Malta, Shelby Vassallo, Shawn Incorvaja will compete in the U-15 category while Shazel Gusman and Owen Bugeja will be lifting in the U-17 category. Then, Rebecca Fitz and Andy Grech will compete in the U-20 Category. Rylee Borg will compete only in the U-15 International open. This competition will be indispensible for most of the athletes as it will be the first international debut for Shelby, Shawn, Rylee, Shazel and Rebecca. On the other hand, although athletes like Owen and Andy are already becoming synonymous in the international scene, such competition will help them earn valuable experience.
The competitions will be organized over Friday 6th and Saturday 7th May at the Cottonera Sports Complex, Cospicua. The Malta Weightlifting Association encourages all those who have sports and weight training at heart not to miss such event as it will be jam-packed with amazing performances, incredible feats of strength and breathless emotions.
