Six clubs took part in this year’s National Championships, hosted by the Malta Weightlifting Association at the Cottonera Sports Complex.
First in action were the cadets. Rylee Borg claimed first place with a total of 109 points followed by Kyle Camilleri on 65 points.
In the men’s youth section, Malcolm Camilleri (-62kg category) emerged victorious with a total of 138kg lifted. Kirstin Coleiro was runner-up with 115kg.
The -94kg weight category saw Owen Bugeja total 195kg to secure top spot as Kieran Mifsud, making a comeback from injury, was the best lifter on the day in the 94kg+ category with 183kg.
Sarah Grixti established no fewer than 10 national records in junior and youth categories in the 69kg+ class with a total of 127kg.
Hayley Mizzi topped the women’s senior -53kg division with a total of 94kg. Dorianne Attard managed 98kg to outsmart Nathalie Borg in the -58kg event.
The -63kg title was won by Krista Camilleri with 122kg, breaking six records in the process, three in Clean and Jerk and three others in total. She was followed by Pamela Psaila with a 110kg total.
Lorna Cachia won the -69kg category with the total lift of 110kg and setting two national records in Clean and Jerk and total. Rodianne Balzan was second with a total lift of 108kg. She broke one record in the snatch lift.
The championships rounded off with the men’s seniors competition.
The -69kg title was won by Malcolm Abela (145kgs) while Eric Saliba was the winner of the -77kg category with 198kgs.
The 85kg was the most fiercely-contested event on the day as Kyle Micallef won the title with a successful 110kg snatch and 135kg in the Clean and Jerk, totalling 245kg.
Ryan Agius (231kg) was second and Jovan Reljic (215kg) third ahead of Matthew Camilleri (175kg).
Noel Coleiro (230kg) won the 94kg class ahead of Daryl Psaila (195kg) and Anton Micallef (147kg).
The 105kg category was won by Calvin Dean Caruana while the 105kg+ title went to Lawrence Ransley.
