The Most Improvement Challenge Trophy

The Malta Weightlifting Association held it’s last competition for this year. This was the last chance for the athletes to improve their positions in the national ranking of 2012. The winner of this competition was that athlete who increased most points from the National Championships.

First to compete were the female athletes and cadets. Here 7 national records were broken, 4 by Ivana Micallef two in the 69kg+ youths and two in 75kg+ juniors and 3 by Nicole Gatt in the 53kg category. Rylee Borg and Blake Vassallo, despite their age, entertained the audience with their lifts showing a good technique. Next to compete were the youths were we had very positive results from these youngsters. Malcolm Camilleri, Owen Bugeja, Keiran Mifsud and Emersin Bugeja are promising athletes who showed great improvement, with Camilleri breaking 3 national records in the 50kg category that been set nothing less than 8 years ago. Joran Farrugia managed to break 3 National Records in the category 94kg+ youths.

In the Senior Competition, there were some good results from Charles Degorgio and Ryan Agius who made his first debut. However one must mention the one to one battle between Rodmar Pulis and Matthew Muscat Inglott were this time Muscat Inglott won with a fraction of a point. This close encounter motivated both athletes to do their personal bests who will be competing again, as a team along with Jovan Relijc and Nicole Gatt in the Mediterranean Cup in Brindisi, Italy this January. This competition was officiated by a nice amount of officials which clearly shows the work done throughout the year.
