Tenishia Thornton, the 17-year-old athlete, recently participated in the European Weightlifting Senior Championships held in Yerevan, Armenia. The event holds great significance as it is an Olympic qualification event for the Paris 2024 games. Thornton competed in the 59kg B category and put up impressive numbers.
During the snatch portion of the competition, Thornton opened with 82kg and moved up to 84kg. Although she missed her third attempt at 86kg, her performance secured her second place in the snatch. Moving onto the Clean & Jerk, Thornton began strongly with a lift of 101kg, and then increased her weight to 105kg but unfortunately; she suffered a cramp while attempting her lift, which affected her performance. Despite her struggle, Thornton managed to lift a total of 185kg, putting her in the 4th position. In the overall she placed in 14th.
Thornton’s excellent performance placed her above athletes from Ireland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Finland, and Israel, despite being the youngest athlete in the group. Her achievement is a testament to her hard work and dedication to the sport. Her participation in this event and her excellent performance are significant milestones in her career. Thornton is undoubtedly a rising star in the weightlifting world, and we can expect to see more great performances from her in the future.
