Zammit Stevens perform in the Europeans.

The Junior and U23 European Weightlifting Championships came to an end this weekend in Eilat, Israel. The 6 day long competition saw over 350 top athletes from all over Europe, including Olympic gold medalists from Rio 2016. Malta’s representative at this major event, Yazmin Zammit Stevens, gave a stellar performance in the 69kg category.

She started off with a close miss at 73kg in the snatch, but quickly recovered to make both the second and third attempts at 73kg and 75kg. Feeling confident, she performed the clean and jerk part of the competition perfectly, getting all three of her attempts at 88kg, 91kg and 93kg, totaling at 168kg. This performance placed Zammit Stevens in 1st place in the b group in the snatch, clean and jerk and the total, out lifting athletes from Poland, Turkey, Netherland, Israel, Ireland, Czech Republic, Denmark and Finland. Overall, she managed to place 9th with 7 new national records capping off her 37th national record this year. Jesmond Caruana was selected as international technical official for the competition where he also participated in the EWF congress and the EWF technical meetings.

Both Zammit Stevens and Caruana will be travelling to Doha this week to compete in the 4th Qatar International Cup. These international events would not be possible without the support of the Malta Olympic committee, SportMalta, EWF and AWF.
